Why Should You Replace a Missing Tooth?
Replacing a missing tooth is about more than just aesthetics; it’s actually important for your overall dental health. Here’s why:
- Keeps Your Teeth in Place: When you lose a tooth, the ones around it can start to shift into the empty space, which can result in misalignment and make it difficult to bite and chew properly. Over time, it can even cause jaw pain and wear on the remaining teeth.
- Protects Your Jawbone: Your jawbone needs stimulation from the roots of your teeth to maintain its density and stay strong. When a tooth is missing, the bone in that area can start to deteriorate, which can change the shape of your face and cause further tooth loss. Replacing the tooth helps keep the jawbone healthy and preserves its integrity.
- Makes Eating and Talking Easier: Missing a tooth can hinder your ability to chew certain foods and might even affect how you speak. Replacing the tooth can make eating and talking feel natural again.
- Boosts Your Confidence: A full, healthy smile can make a huge difference in how you feel about yourself. Filling that gap will hopefully help you feel more confident and comfortable in social situations.
What Are My Single Tooth Replacement Options?
If you’re missing just a single tooth, you typically have three options, each with its own advantages and potential disadvantages.
- Dental Implants
- Dental Bridge
- Partial Dentures
Implants are typically considered the gold standard for replacing a tooth. They involve placing a small titanium post into your jawbone, which acts as an artificial tooth root. A custom crown is then attached to the post, and the end result is a natural-looking tooth.
Pros of Dental Implants
Firstly, implants are undoubtedly the most realistic replacement option. They’re also extremely durable and can last a lifetime since they’re made of corrosion-resistant titanium. Implants also replace the root of a missing tooth, so you won’t have to worry about jawbone deterioration.
Cons of Dental Implants
Dental implants are the most expensive replacement option on this list. However, some people save money in the long run because of their longevity. The process of receiving implants also takes the longest, with the installation taking anywhere from six to eight months. Once the implants are in place, it could be an additional six months before the area heals completely.
Dental bridges are another popular single-tooth replacement option; this method involves anchoring a false tooth (pontic) to the adjacent healthy teeth using crowns.
Pros of Dental Bridges
Installing a dental bridge is less invasive and more affordable than implants. Plus, the bridge procedure typically only takes 2-3 weeks to complete, unlike implants, which can take months because of the healing time.
Cons of Dental Bridges
The teeth adjacent to the gap will need to be filed down to hold the bridge. If you’d rather those teeth stay as-is, implants or dentures might be a better choice.
You’ll also have to replace dental bridges every 10 to 15 years. Finally, unlike implants, bridges don’t stimulate the jawbone, which means you could still lose jawbone density over time.
If you’re leaning toward something removable, partial dentures are also a great option for replacing one or more missing teeth. They’re made up of artificial teeth that are attached to a gum-colored base that clips onto your existing teeth.
Pros of Partial Dentures
If cost is your main priority, partial dentures are generally the least expensive way to replace a tooth. The procedure also doesn’t require surgery, which makes it less intimidating for some patients.
Cons of Partial Dentures
Because they’re removable, dentures might not feel as secure as implants or bridges. Additionally, some people find partials to be bulky or difficult to get used to at first. You’ll also need to clean and adjust them regularly to keep them fitting well.
Which Option Is Right for Me?
In many cases, it comes down to your budget, oral health, and what you’re most comfortable with.
As mentioned above, if you want something that looks and feels real, consider implants. A dental bridge might be the way to go if you’d prefer a less invasive option that doesn’t involve surgery. And finally, if you’re watching your budget or need something you can take out, partial dentures will get the job done.
What Causes Tooth Loss?
Knowing just what causes tooth loss can help you take preventive measures in the future. Here are some of the most common reasons people lose teeth.
- Tooth Decay: Cavities can weaken teeth over time, which, if left untreated, might lead to decay that requires extraction.
- Gum Disease: Periodontal disease can cause the gums to recede and weaken the supporting structures of the teeth, which could eventually end up in tooth loss.
- Accidents or Injuries: Anything from sports accidents to falls and injuries can cause you to lose teeth.
- Aging: Our teeth naturally become more vulnerable to decay and damage as we age.
