How to Use Invisalign® Cleaning Crystals

Invisalign® Cleaning Crystals are one of the best ways to keep your aligners bacteria-free. They are specifically designed to be gentle enough to not damage your aligners, yet tough enough to sanitize them. Here is how to use them:

  1. Pre-rinse

    2. The first step is to thoroughly rinse the aligners to get rid of any food particles. Skipping this step may result in food still being in the aligners when you put them back in. Wearing your aligners with even the smallest bit of food in them can cause tooth decay.

  2. Fill Cup With Water and Aligners

    3. Next, fill a cup with enough warm water to submerge the aligners, then drop them into the cup. DO NOT use hot water as it will cause your Invisalign® trays to become misshapen. Invisalign® works by gently moving your teeth with different sets of aligners, which means those aligners need to be kept in perfect condition. If they become damaged or misshapen in any way, it could throw off the overall treatment plan.

  3. Add Cleaning Crystals

    4. After warm water and aligners are in the cup, pour in one packet of Invisalign® Cleaning Crystals.

  4. Mix Crystal Until They Dissolve

    5. Gently swirl or stir the water in the cup for about 15-20 seconds, or until the cleaning crystals dissolve. Once dissolved, let the Invisalign® trays soak for about 20 minutes.

  5. Rinse

    6. Make sure to thoroughly rinse your aligners after you take them out of the cleaning mixture. This helps avoid a bad taste and possible damage to your teeth or the aligners themselves. Again, DO NOT use hot water.

How Often Should You Use Invisalign® Cleaning Crystals?

We recommend using Invisalign® Cleaning Crystals twice a day — in the morning and at night. You can get by soaking your aligners in the crystals once per day as long as you safely disinfect them a second time during the day.

While braces are the tried and true method, millions of people trust both straightening techniques to align their teeth. Invisalign® vs. Braces: Which Is Faster

This study provides evidence that Invisalign® can work almost six months faster than braces to achieve nearly the same results. If Invisalign® can work faster than braces, they must be more painful, right? Well, not necessarily. Many people still have the “no pain no gain” mentality when it comes to teeth straightening, but this simply isn’t the case. Invisalign® is able to be relatively pain-free because the aligners apply less pressure to the teeth than braces since changes are made in smaller increments than braces. Aligners are changed to further tooth movement about every week while braces are adjusted about every month, so braces require more pressure up front to consistently change tooth alignment throughout the whole month.

How Does Invisalign® Work?

The process of Invisalign® has a few different steps, requiring a couple different visits to your local dentist. Here’s how it works:
  • Consultation – A consultation is required to make sure Invisalign® is an appropriate tooth alignment method and that no prior dental work is needed. Some things that may need to be addressed include root canal treatment or periodontal therapy. During this appointment, you’ll also have X-rays and imaging done to make sure Invisalign could correct your teeth misalignment.
  • 3D Scan – Once approved for Invisalign®, a 3D scan is taken of the patient’s mouth to be sent to Invisalign® so they can manufacture the custom aligners. During this stage, a treatment timeline is established
  • Aligner Fitting & Attachment Nodes Placement – The aligners should arrive in about four weeks, which is when patients will come in to make sure their first set of aligners are a perfect fit! We may also apply small, discreet nodes to four teeth. These nodes help the aligners stay on the teeth while still allowing easy removal
  • Straightening Process – The straightening process generally takes six to 24 months. During this time, patients receive new aligners every one to two weeks to promote quick and consistent alignment correction. Even though clear aligners won’t require adjustments like braces do, we still recommend visiting your dentist every few weeks to make sure your teeth are moving the way they should be
  • Final Evaluation – When patients finish their last set of aligners, an evaluation is conducted to see if further alignment will be necessary. If everything looks good, the nodes are removed and you walk away with a straighter smile!
  • Retainers – Once the desired alignment is achieved, a retainer is fit to keep the teeth straight. Without a retainer, teeth will begin to shift back to their original misalignment.

How Do Braces Work?

The process for getting braces is much different than Invisalign®. In general it requires more visits to the orthodontist and, usually, is a little more painful than straightening your teeth with clear aligners.
  • Consultation – This consultation consists of a thorough dental exam and x-rays. During the consultation, a plan for straightening is determined based on the individual’s needs
  • Application – Typically, on the second visit, brackets and molar bands are installed to each tooth, which hold the wire that does the actual straightening. After the brackets are bonded to the teeth and the sliders attached, the wire is ready to be connected using elastic bands
  • Straightening Process – The length of time for alignment correction takes between 12 and 36 months, and the wires are changed and tightened about once a month. Generally, throughout this alignment process, each replacement wire is thicker than the last. This allows further movement of the teeth toward the desired goal
  • Removal – The removal of braces is essentially the reverse of getting them installed, down to the x-rays. The x-rays are done to make sure the bone has properly healed, and no issues have arisen during the treatment
  • Retainer – A retainer is required after the desired alignment has been achieved to keep the teeth in the desired place and prevent them from reverting to their prior misalignment

How Much Does Invisalign® Cost?

The base price for Invisalign® typically starts around $3,000 and can get up to about $9,000. The severity of tooth misalignment is a primary determining factor in the actual price a patient will pay. This is because treatment time is closely related to the distance teeth need to travel to achieve the desired result. Next, responsibility is a key component in price and treatment time because aligners must be worn for 20-22 hours. If patients don’t wear their aligners as directed, teeth will begin shifting back, resulting in negative progress and extended treatment. How To Clean Invisalign® Retainers

Using Invisalign® to straighten your teeth requires a lot of responsibility. Not only do patients need to take care of the aligners, but properly care for their teeth before aligners are put back in after eating. Keeping Invisalign® trays clean is a vital part of maintaining a healthy mouth and keeping the trays discreet. Failure to properly clean them will cause bacteria to build on them and may lead to cavities or periodontal disease.

How To Clean Invisalign® Retainers (at Home!)

Patients have several options for cleaning their Invisalign® aligning trays. Some options are slightly more time-intensive, so keep that in mind when choosing a method, as rushing could result in inadequate cleaning.

Invisalign® Cleaning Crystals

While there are several retainer cleaners on the market, we recommend using the Invisalign® cleaning crystals since they are safe and won’t damage the aligning trays. In addition to proven success, these cleaning crystals are an easy way to clean the retainers. Since they come with detailed instructions and single-use packets, there is no guesswork required when creating an effective mixture. Using these is as simple as pouring a crystal packet into the specified amount of water and letting the trays soak in the solution for about 15 minutes.

Toothbrush and Mild Soap

Using a toothbrush and a mild soap is one of the quickest ways to clean Invisalign® retainers, but not just any toothbrush and soap will suffice. A soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive clear soap must be used to prevent scratching the aligners. Put the soap on the brush like toothpaste and lightly brush the aligners all over. Even with a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive soap, brushing too hard will put tiny scratches on the trays and reduce their transparency. Additionally, colored soap may also affect transparency as it could stain the trays. This cleaning method will take about five minutes.

White Vinegar & Water Soak

White vinegar is a great way to clean and disinfect Invisalign® retainers without staining them. Because white vinegar is clear, it won’t stain the aligners like apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar. To effectively clean Invisalign® aligners with white vinegar, dilute with water. The recommended mixture consists of between 25% and 50% vinegar, so the acid in the vinegar does not damage the trays. For the best results, use lukewarm or room-temperature filtered or distilled water in the mixture, and let them soak for about 20 minutes as part of a nightly routine.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Due to its disinfecting properties, hydrogen peroxide is a great way to thoroughly clean Invisalign® aligners. Mix a 50/50 ratio of hydrogen peroxide and room temperature or lukewarm water, then soak aligning trays for 20-30 minutes.

How Not To Clean Invisalign® Retainers

While there are many great ways to clean Invisalign® retainers, there are also a few things you should avoid using. The items below could affect the transparency and fit of your Invisalign® aligners.
  • Denture Cleaner – Denture cleaner is too harsh to use on Invisalign® trays and can cause them to take on a hazy appearance
  • Toothpaste – Most toothpaste has an abrasive ingredient to help scrub away plaque from teeth, but the plastic used in the retainers is much too soft to use this type of abrasion
Using toothpaste on them will create tiny scratches on the trays and cause them to be less clear, which creates areas where bacteria can more easily grow
  • Scented Soap – Mild and scent-free soaps are recommended because scented soaps can leave a very bitter taste and encourage patients to keep them out of their mouths longer than they should
  • Mouthwash – Most mouthwashes are colored and a lot contain alcohol. Both are things to stay away from when cleaning aligning trays. The color in the mouthwash can very easily stain the trays, while the alcohol can have a similar effect on them as denture cleaner
  • Hot Water – Most aligners, including Invisalign®, are made from a thin plastic that can warp with heat. If this happens, the retainers will no longer fit correctly and may even cause negative progress in the aligning process

How Often Should I Clean Invisalign® Aligners?

It’s best to clean your Invisalign® aligners every day, just like you’re supposed to do to maintain good oral hygiene. You can clean them while you brush your teeth or when you’re eating.

How Can I Get Stains Out of Invisalign® Aligners?

If your aligners got stained either from not properly brushing your teeth after eating teeth-staining foods, or from improper cleaning techniques, some of the methods above may work to get the stains out. For example, white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide solutions can work well as stain removers. However, you may have stained your aligners to a point where it’s not possible to get them fully transparent again. In this case, you’ll either have to wait it out until it’s time for your next set of aligners, or ask your dentist if they could make you a new set of your current aligners.

Consultation and Evaluation

As with most dental procedures or treatments, Invisalign® requires an initial consultation to evaluate each patient’s teeth. During this evaluation, Dr. Zicchino will see if any preliminary work needs to be performed to promote a safe and comfortable experience with Invisalign® Sometimes tooth restoration needs to be performed on weak or decaying teeth to ensure they don’t break or further decay during the straightening process. Dr. Zicchino will also check gum health and make sure there are no issues that would cause increased discomfort or infection down the road. Beginning to use Invisalign® aligners without fixing any of these issues would not only cause the experience to be very uncomfortable, but it would add to overall treatment time. A recovery period accompanies all of the procedures that fix these issues, so the alignment process would be pushed back.

3D Scan

We use a state-of-the-art scanner to render a 3D model of the patient’s mouth. Sometimes this is done on the initial visit and other times it requires a follow-up appointment. This method allows us to ensure a precise aligner fit for the best results and the most comfortable experience possible.

Get Your Custom Invisalign® Aligners

BPA-free plastic aligner trays will be custom-made based on the 3D model. Each patient receives a new set of trays every 2-3 weeks based on progress. Each new set of aligners will be slightly different to continue correcting the alignment of the patient’s teeth. After receiving your first set of aligners, we’ll make sure they fit properly and don’t cause any unnecessary discomfort. While you will feel some soreness at first, that’s completely normal! After ensuring they’re a perfect fit, your Invisalign® treatment officially starts! For the quickest results, the aligners must be worn the recommended 20-22 hours daily. You should only take them out when you eat, drink anything besides water, brush your teeth, or clean out the aligners. We’ll schedule regular dental visits with you every few weeks to check in on the progress of your teeth straightening and address any questions or concerns you may have.

How Well Does Invisalign Work?

In many cases, Invisalign® works better than traditional braces. Aligners tend to be less hassle than braces, and patients often achieve their desired alignment in a shorter period. Plus, no one will even notice you’re wearing them!

Does Invisalign Work For Everyone?

Invisalign® works for almost everyone, but it is not recommended for those who may not be able to keep up with the care required to maintain healthy teeth or patients who require severe correction. Patients should remove aligners when eating and drinking anything besides water to avoid breaking the trays. Besides breaking, not removing them to eat and drink could result in debris or liquid getting trapped between the aligning trays and the patient’s teeth causing stains or even cavities. For this same reason, it is important to clean aligners and teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste before putting them back in. If proper maintenance cannot be sustained throughout treatment, Invisalign® is not recommended.

How Long Does It Take Invisalign To Work?

The timeline for Invisalign® treatment varies from person to person but typically takes between six months and two years. The primary variables that affect how long Invisalign® takes to get desirable results include how diligently the aligners are worn, the severity of teeth misalignment, and age.

Does Invisalign Hurt?

Some patients experience some discomfort during the alignment process, but this discomfort is usually just gum soreness or gum tenderness, which is normal. Compared to braces, there’s much less pain associated with Invisalign®, as you don’t have the potential for metal wires and brackets to irritate and poke the inside of your mouth. Severe pain is extremely rare and should be reported to Dr. Zicchino if it persists after the first day of getting a new aligner.

How Long Does Invisalign® Take to Work?

It generally takes six months to two years for Invisalign® aligners to give our patients their desired alignment.  In most cases, straighter teeth can be achieved in a shorter time frame than with braces. A quicker straightening process is possible because the Invisalign® aligner trays work to correct every tooth simultaneously. In contrast, braces focus on straightening each tooth individually despite typically going on every tooth.

How Long Does Invisalign® Take to See Results? 

You could start seeing results from Invisalign® treatment within just a few weeks!  Result time varies from person to person, and desired results can take upwards of two years, but progress can become visible very quickly.  Although straighter teeth may be observed within a month, no one should take this as a sign to get complacent with the time they spend wearing their aligners. It is vital to wear the aligners for the time recommended by Dr. Zicchino.

What Affects Invisalign Treatment Time? 

Several factors affect treatment time using Invisalign®. Variables include how diligently the aligners are worn, the age of the patient, and the severity of tooth misalignment. 

How Long You Wear Your Retainers For

It is crucial to wear the Invisalign® aligners for the recommended time of 20-22 hours per day.  The two to four hours per day that the aligners can be removed are reserved for eating, drinking anything besides water, brushing teeth, and cleaning the aligning trays. Leaving aligners out for much more than two to four hours per day will allow the teeth to start shifting again. If this happens, the treatment time will lengthen, costing more money overall.

Your Age 

Responsibility is the primary factor age plays in treatment time for Invisalign®. Teens are generally less diligent about how often they wear their aligners and tend to lose them more frequently.  Every extra hour a patient goes without wearing their aligners delays desired results. This said, losing them could mean spending days waiting on a new set, causing negative progress. To help hold teens accountable, Invisalign Teen® was created. This product is virtually identical to traditional Invisalign® but bears a small blue dot that fades away after two weeks. At the end of two weeks, if the dot is still visible, it can be concluded that the patient did not wear their aligners as directed. In addition, with Invisalign Teen®, patients can get up to six free replacements in the event aligners are lost or broken.

The Severity of Tooth Misalignment Being Fixed

The severity of tooth misalignment plays a major role in the treatment timeline.  Invisalign® aligners can correct most tooth alignment issues on their own. Occasionally, patients may require a procedure such as dental restoration before beginning the straightening process. This is determined during the patient’s preliminary evaluation and is explained in great detail by Dr. Zicchino.

How Painful is Invisalign? 

One of the primary benefits of Invisalign® is that the aligners are relatively painless; especially compared to braces. Some patients do, however, report some discomfort, and only a handful report actual pain. The most common side effect of Invisalign® is sore or tender gums, which is nothing to worry about.

What to Expect During Your First Day of Invisalign® 

You’ve been waiting to straighten your smile for a long time and you’re eager to see the results! When the treatment is over, you will finally have the smile that you always wanted, but there are a few things you should know about what to expect when you get your first set of Invisalign® aligners. 

Temporary Lisp

When you begin your Invisalign® treatment, it isn’t unlikely to begin speaking with a slight lisp. Before you begin worrying about talking like this the entire treatment, remember that it is just a result of your tongue getting used to the aligners in your mouth. This usually goes away after approximately a week.

Irritation of Soft Tissues

When you first get Invisalign®, the soft tissues in your mouth won’t be used to the edges of your aligners quite yet. You will likely experience some irritation on your gums or the inside of your lips.  This should go away after you get accustomed to wearing the aligners over time. You could also use some dental wax or a clean emery board to fix issues with sharp edges at home.  If you are experiencing extreme discomfort or this does not improve, call your dentist. They will likely be able to trim or polish the edges in order to make the aligners more comfortable.

Soreness

No teeth straightening option comes without soreness. Even though Invisalign® aligners won’t be as uncomfortable as regular braces, you are still bound to experience some discomfort associated with the pressure being put on your teeth to move them to their new locations.  This pain should subside after a few days. If you need to relieve the soreness, you can take over-the-counter pain medication.

Difficulty Inserting & Removing Invisalign® Aligners

Invisalign® aligners are designed to fit your teeth perfectly and tightly. This means that it can be difficult to remove when you need to eat, drink, or brush your teeth.  Even though your dentist will show you how it’s done, it can still be difficult to get the hang of it. When removing your aligners, use your fingertips to slowly pull the aligners off your teeth, starting from your molars and working your way towards the front of your mouth.  As time goes on, especially at the end of each two-week wear period, removing your aligners should get easier.  The first few days may not be the most comfortable and even feel a bit awkward. However, after a little bit of time you will easily be able to adjust to the aligners. With patience, you will be on a path towards a straighter smile!

How Long Does it Take to Get Used to Invisalign®? 

It takes most dental patients anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to get used to wearing Invisalign® aligners around the clock. The soreness and feeling you have when you put in your first set of aligners will gradually disappear as your teeth shift into their proper places.  With each new aligner, you may experience some slight discomfort as your teeth slowly shift. 

How Long Does Invisalign® Hurt? 

While Invisalign® doesn’t hurt as much as braces do, you will still experience some discomfort when you first start wearing your aligners. The good news is that this discomfort usually subsides within a week! So you can expect the worst of it to be over after your first week.
